Star Spangled Spirit
June 1 2010
Start getting out the red, white and blue! America's 234th birthday is fast approaching. This day is chock full of celebrations, parades, barbecues and more - it's a great time to pour on the patriotism and delight in our freedom.

There are gifts a-plenty to pass along on this day whether it's for a host or hostess, your next door neighbor, or just for the family. People love to wear their American pride and decorate their digs. And everyone appreciates a token of true red, white and blue thanks that celebrates the good old U S of A.

Fun Facts for the Fourth:

The Declaration of Independence - largely written by one of America's favorite sons, Thomas Jefferson - was approved by a vote in Congress on July 2, 1776, but the wording of the document still needed to be approved. The United States' independence from Great Britain wasn't considered official until July 4 when members of congress revised and signed the final document.

The most famous version of the Declaration sits on display at the National Archives in Washington, D.C. Many believe this to be the Declaration of Independence, but alas, it is only a signed copy.

The oldest continuous Independence Day celebration in the United States is held in Bristol, Rhode Island, where a 4th of July Parade has been held since 1785.

George Washington marked July 4, 1778 with a double ration of rum for his soldiers.

The United States Government did not declare July 4th a federal holiday until 1938.
